One way to minimize pollution is to focus on the particular waste product entering the environment and transforming that waste product into a harmless byproduct from the industrial process. As many people can observe, many industrial plants have smoke stacks that release the gas byproducts of chemical reactions from the industrial process. Since the Industrial Revolution, those gases have commonly been associated with declining public health and environmental pollution. The gases are typically in the form of hydro-carbons called HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants) and can sometimes foster hazardous organic compounds called VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Instead of these gases exiting the industrial plant through the smokestacks, the gases are routed toward the thermal oxidizer.
