Health and Wellness: Blood in my Kid’s Eye – What should I do?

Published by:

It’s a bit horrifying to see that there is blood in the eye of your little one – if you are not very familiar with Subconjuctival hemorrhage. Even the term itself sounds scary, right? However, most cases of ‘bleeding in the eye‘ are usually not a cause for concern.

A few days ago, my daughter Ysha had blood in her left eye because she accidentally poked it with a toy (good thing it wasn’t sharp). Now, this subconjunctival hemorrhage (or blood in the eye) happens when small blood vessels in the whites of the eyes break and cause a red spot or speck. This can be because of a sudden increase in blood pressure due to sneezing, coughing, vomiting, straining, or even laughing so hard. Continue reading

Health and Wellness : Kids – When to Worry About a Bump on the Head

Published by:

Most of the time, a bump on the head isn’t something we should be too worried about. Kids fall and get into all sorts of accidents and injuries almost all the time. Most parents worry a lot and lose sleep whenever their kid has a fever. A lot of moms like me have fever phobia because we have tons of misconceptions about fever. I’ve done a bit of research and I’ve read that fevers are generally harmless. It is technically just your body’s way of telling you that something out of the usual is happening in your body and it is trying to fight off that unusual ‘situation’, which is probably some sort of infection. Having a fever is part of our body’s normal response when it is fighting off an infection.

It isn’t true that all fevers have to be treated with fever medicine right away. Health professionals generally recommend fever treatment only if it causes discomfort – and that usually happens when it goes above 39° C or 102° F. We should also take note of the fact that fevers may or may not keep going higher with or without treatment – it all depends on the kind of illness which causes your fever plus your body’s immune system. In the case of viral infections (which is a common cause of fever), taking fever medication will temporarily break a fever streak but when the effect of the medicine wears off, the fever will return and it won’t completely go away until the body overpowers the virus which caused the infection.
